The
fairy tail of the Beauty of the Seven Cedars and the
singing of the White Blackbird |
Where a bravehearted Chavalier and a fire-spitting Dragon fight for
gaining possession or saving an incredibly beautiful Princess. And where the
melodic singing of the White Blackbird is discovered to be able to cure the
old heart of a King and to seed love and passion in the young heart of a
Prince. |
From a popular and orally trasmitted novel that belongs to
Mediterranean traditions and culture and that I listened fromm the very lips
of my grandma Caterina. |
Once upon a time, when the actual civilization was far to appare, in a
great and tall castle built on the top of a steep hill in the Rampinzeri
countryside, somewere in the Sicilian inner lands, there lived a King with all
his family and hundreds of courtisans. Life was happy and easy till the day the
King fell sik and everybody trembled and feared for his destiny. The Queen
retired into her appartaments and refused to talk to anyone. Many sapients and
people of science were called to the bed of the King and each one went back
away nodding his head and saing desperately he couldn't do anything to help. Untill
one day an Old Man knoked at the door of the castle asking for His Majesty and
promising to cure the misterous ill. After a long visit to the King the Old Man
said that the only way to get rid of the desease was, for His Majesty, only the
every day hearing of the beautiful and wonderful singing of the White
Blackbird.
At first the family regaind hope but, as soon as the Old Man disappared down
the path, between the leafy branches of the Saracenian olive trees, everyone
asked where a White Blackbird could be found but nobody was able to give any
answer. A few days elapsed and the Queen returned silent in Her isolation,
untill one night the first son of the King, Prince Friederick, had a dream; and
in the dream the Old Man appared and told him to be faithful, to make ready for
a long trip and leave in search of the White Blackbird: with the help of his
trust he could find it. The day after, as soon as awakened, the Prince went to
his mother and told her he would leave immediately in search of the White
Blackbird he was certain to be able to find. The Queen tried to oppose but the
Prince convinced her that it was the only wise thing to do. So he took a brave
and white horse, a new and sparkling sword and was ready to leave. At the
castle door the Qeen gave him a kiss and posed in his hands three enchanted
glass balls and told him: "if you happen to run into some bad peril take
one of theese balls and trhow it after your shoulders and you will receave
God's help. But be careful: never turn back for seeing what happens with the
balls!". So the young Prince left and in the midst of an intense jasmine
perfume galloped through the blooming land of his father. Miles an miles
passed, from the dusty hills to the ardent sand of the sea shore; after three
days of riding the Prince fell tired at the bottom of a palm tree and lulled by
the steady song of thousands of cicadas fell asleep. And during the sleep he
had a new dream, where the Old Man still appared coming out of the foggy air
and walking upon the waters of the sea. "Keep and keep going along this
road, than you'll find an Old Man older than me; ask him: he knows where you
can find the White Blackbird who's singing is able tu cure a sik man
heart". "Keep and keep going along this road, than you'll find an Old
Man older than me … ", with this sound in his ears the Prince awakened,
jumped on his white horse and resumed again his way. Miles an miles passed,
trough the ancient ruins of the Greek Temples and the stony truchs of a dry
river bed, after other three days of riding the Prince arrived tirsty to a
water fountain an there, after drinking some fresh water and tiding his horse
in the restoring shadow of a giant carob tree, the Pince waited for the sun to
go down and lulled by the steady song of thousands of grasshoppers fell asleep.
And during the sleep he had a new dream, where the Old Man still appared coming
out of the fresh shadow of a fig tree. His beard was white an long, tired and
bending upon his knees said: "Keep and keep going along this road, than
you'll find an Old Man older than me; ask him: he knows where you can find the
White Blackbird who's singing is able tu cure a sik man heart". The Prince
awakened when the sun was not jet in the sky, but he took his horse and kept
going alond a dusty road that was bendig and climbing over the stony fianchi of
the mountains. The Prince was exausted and his hope to find the White Blachbird
was begining to fade when, sitting ogainst the sunny side of a big stone, he
saw the Old Man sleeping: his beard was longer and whiter. The Prince went
closer and touched his right hand. The Old Man, that now was very old, rised
his head and watching deeply into the eyes of the Prince said: : "Keep and
keep going along this road, than you'll find a little village in a deep valley;
there everybody knows where the White Blackbird is. Your faith has wone: God
bless you".
The Prince at the end found the village and, hearing the sound of the chirch
bell entered. Inside he found the chapel master, got close to him and asked
where the White Blachbird could be found. The poor man was deaf and continuied
ringing the bell and repeating to himself: "ding dong the mass I sing,
ding dong this is the song"…
The traslation of the
remaining of this story as soon as I'll have the time to write it down ! If
someone could help me, he/she is welcome!
In
braccio e cominciò a scendere.
